INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL ASSURE MODEL

INTRODUCTION

Andrews and Goodson (1980) state instructional design models serve three purposes:

1. The problem solving and feedback characteristics of the systematic approach.
2. The monitoring and control function of the systematic approach.
3. The design components and sequence of events , including the feedback and revision of event

 

ASSURE MODEL

 

A    - Analyze learners

S    - State Objectives

S    - Select Methods, Media and Material

U   - Utilize Media and Materials

R   - Require Learner Participation

E   - Evaluate and Revise

 

Step 1: Analyze learners

To identify your audience in the following aspects:

1. General Characteristics
2. Prerequisite skill or Knowledge
3. Learning styles
4. Motivations

 

General Characteristics

  Such as age, gender, geography/location, accessibility needs, etc.

  What group do they belong to, Students, teachers, etc.

Prerequisite skill or Knowledge 

What are the prerequisite courses prior to this one?

 What knowledge is assumed?

Learning styles

•      Visual

•       Aural

•       Verbal

•       Physical

•       Logical

•       Social

•       Solitary

Motivations

•      Why learners take this course?

•       What are learner’s needs of taking this course? For degree, For training, etc ?

Step 2: State Objectives        

 ASSURE model adopts an ABCD format in writing proper Objectives, so that instructors understand. 

 The ABCD format is:

1.Audience

2.Behaviour

3.Condition

4.Degree

Audience - Focus on what learners doing?

Behaviour -What the audience will have after the instruction?

Conditions - How will the performance be observed?

Degree - Which acceptable performance will be judged? i.e. time & accuracy.

Step 3: Select Methods, Media and Materials

Build a bridge between the audience and the objectives

•       Choosing Method – needs and leaning styles of the students

•      Choosing Media Format – The instruction situation, learner variables, and nature of the objective must be considered.(charts , slides, audio, video, computer multimedia)

Obtaining Specific Materials

•      Selecting Available Materials

•      Involving the Media/Technology

•      Specialist

•      Selection Criteria

•      Instructor’s Personal File

Step 4: Utilize Media and Materials

The Five P’s In Utilize Instructional Materials

•       Preview the Materials

•      Prepare the Materials (Practice)

•      Prepare the Environment

•      Prepare the Learners

•      Provide the Leaning Experience

Planning

•      Analyze your leaners

•      Identify the Key points to cover

•      Identify the Sub points and Supporting details

•      Organize – presentation – sequence order

Delivery

•      Voice

•      Eye contact

•      Gesture

•      Visuals

Step 5: Require Learner Participation

“Actively and individually involved in the lesson”

  Activities to allow learners to practice  knowledge or skills

• Student self - checks
• Computer - assisted  interaction
• Internet activities
• Group games

Step 6: Evaluate and Revise

Evaluation is derived from the objectives.

You can assess and evaluate by:

• Issuing a pen and paper test
• Conducting a computerized assessment
• Calling on demonstrate a process
• Discussing a topic 
• Measuring an attitude
• Observe a behaviour
